Myth or reality? Does the sauna remove toxins from the body?
We've already heard a lot about the benefits of the sauna... But what do Jimsers really think? And above all, what does science have to say about it? But is it really true? To find out, we asked Marie Hechtermans, Sports Doctor, who was our guest on the last podcast.
Marie brings a human and scientific approach, a passion for movement, and an enlightened view of recovery.
Myth of eliminating toxins via the sauna
What you need to know:
The body's main natural means of eliminating waste is through urine and faeces.
Sweating eliminates very few toxins → its effect is marginal compared to the natural ways.
Saunas do not treat hangovers: they can even worsen dehydration.
Recommended alternative in the event of dehydration: electrolyte tablets and caffeine.
Origin of the myth
Popular belief: the sauna "cleanses" the body.
Historical analogy: comparable to the "purification" practices of the Middle Ages (bodily exorcism).
Other similar practices: juice-only cures, extreme detox, etc.
Medical point of view
Sauna is less dangerous than some extreme detox methods.
But it does not replace the body's natural elimination mechanisms.
Conclusion:
💡 Myth - The sauna does not significantly flush out toxins. However, it is still excellent for relaxation, muscle recovery and general well-being.
